Recovery Readiness: Reopening Student Housing Guidelines

Cushman & Wakefield Higher Education experts, in partnership with Brailsford & Dunlavey External Link, have assembled the Reopening Student Housing Guidelines to share experiences, industry knowledge and best practices to higher education.

As the US begins to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, and as stay-at-home restrictions across the country are lifted, colleges and universities must prepare and plan for the fall 2020 semester. At the time of writing, most intend to open in some capacity in the fall, often with significant modifications to their standard operational procedures to address the pandemic.

While the thousands of college and university campuses differ in terms of size, geography, and structure, many commonalities still exist in the ways in which they operate and therefore must adapt to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among their campus communities.

Self Storage COVID-19 Report

Pre-COVID-19, the self-storage market was on an upward trajectory. Construction spending had slowed down, facilities were leasing up, and demand for self-storage product was strong. Since the pandemic began, rental activity is down, both with move-ins and move-outs. Some tenants will vacate units due to financial constraints over the next several months. As the economy opens back up, self-storage will bounce back as it did after the Great Recession of 2007/2009. Self-storage remains relatively resilient with minimal fundamental changes to underlying drivers of demand in the long-term.

Several of the Top 15 Self Storage Markets in the U.S. (based on number of facilities) are found in the West region: Los Angeles (5), Phoenix (7), Riverside (9), Seattle (12) and San Francisco (15).
